Tuesday Night Life

In my last blog, I discussed how I am an adoption counselor. While I love this aspect of volunteering, there are so many other activities that I have to do. One of those is medicating all the sick animals, both cats and dogs. I wouldn't say this is my favorite part of volunteering, but I have learned so much because of it.

This Tuesday night, our giant med board was covered in medications for the different animals. We had mostly cat meds to give out. Due to the very close quarters in the cat room, whenever one cat gets sick, they all do! The dog room has the same problems. The very close quarters in the dog room make it very difficult to stop the spread of germs. We are battling kennel cough now, which is very contagious to the other dogs. Just like people get sick in the wintertime, it seems like most of our animals get sick then too. Quite a few of the cats have been passing ringworm around, which is contagious to people also. I have to be careful to make sure everything I touch is sanitized when I am done.

This aspect of volunteering is one that requires me to pay close attention to the details. I have to make sure the right animals are getting the correct medication and dosage. I also have to make sure that I keep everything sanitary in an attempt to stop the spread of germs to other animals and to myself.

It is during this time of the year when we are desperately looking for fosters for our animals to recover along with donations to pay for medications. Once we get some of the sick animals moved out of the facility to foster homes, they are able to recover so much quicker. It also helps the other animals from catching the illness.

Here is a group of 6 sick kittens who all had to be medicated this Tuesday night.
